All Adam and I had were normal hiking boots, not ice climbing boots (which have much stiffer soles so you can kick into the ice with crampons.)  Luckily, the ice axes give you an amazing amount of hold. 

As I so expertly demonstrate here, it is hard to get a foot hold...
